“There were over 1,000 patients, and patients who had had acupuncture done in the correct place had double the pregnancy [rate] after IVF”
Professor Rob Norman
German researchers tried to determine the effect of acupuncture on assisted reproduction therapy (ART) success rates.
In the study half of the women received standard IVF. The other half were given acupuncture treatments before and after.
In the acupuncture group, 42.5 percent of patients became pregnant, while in the IVF-only group, 26.3% of patients conceived.
These results were reported by a reputable journal of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine “Fertility and Sterility” in April 2002.
In October 2004 another study from USA emerged, with impressive results.
Acupuncture before and after IVF not only considerably increased the success rates, but also substantially increased live birth rates. Furthermore, it substantially reduced risk of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies.
We already know that acupuncture improves fertility in numerous ways; such as:
- Improves the function of the ovaries to produce better quality eggs
- Regulates the menstrual cycle (and its hormones) to produce a larger number of follicles
- Increases blood flow to the uterus and increases the thickness of the uterine lining
- Relaxes the patient and reduces stress
- Decreases risk of miscarriage
- Decreases risk of ectopic pregnancy
- Improves live birth rate
While acupuncture may increase the success rates of assisted reproductive techniques (A.R.T.) including IVF, ICSI, IUI and other, our goal is for you to conceive naturally, if possible, without the use of A.R.T.
There are couples who for various physical reasons will not be able to conceive without the use of assisted reproduction. In cases like this, we aim to balance and prepare your body so your chance of successful IVF or IUI is significantly increased.

Trying to Conceive? Having Problems? Acupuncture Can Help
What is Acupuncture for Fertility?
Acupuncture is a form of physical medicine that originated in China over 4000 years ago. It uses very thin, sterile needles, inserted into specific points on the body, to manipulate and balance the flow of energy through the body. When we are in balance, our bodies function optimally: our organs function well, our sleep is restful, we are resistant to disease, we recover easily from injury, and our reproductive capacity is functional. For a variety of reasons this balance can become disturbed. Imbalance gives rise to symptoms, including infertility. Acupuncture aims to correct any imbalance, eliminating any and all symptoms that the imbalance caused. Acupuncture for fertility can boost your fertility and increase your chances of success when you are trying to conceive.
How Can Acupuncture Help With Fertility?
Acupuncture can help with all stages in the fertility journey from conception to delivery. Some benefits of acupuncture include:
- Regulate the menses and increase the blood flow to the uterus
- Improve sperm count
- Relieve stress
- Regulate the hormones and increase ovarian response function
- Reduce the side effects of hormone treatments
- Increase and strengthen the immune system
- Improve the success rate of IVF
- Decrease the chances of miscarriage and increase the rate of live birth
Acupuncture / Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and PCOS
Acupuncture is extremely effective in regulating hormone levels in the body, and this is quite helpful when treating a patient who has been diagnosed with PCOS and is trying to conceive. By balancing the body’s hormone levels, acupuncture has been shown to make periods more regular and help patients ovulate*. If weight is an issue, acupuncture can also support the PCOS patient by helping with weight loss. It does this through its ability to balance hormones, curb appetite, and reduce stress. Using Chinese herbs is also an effective adjunct to the acupuncture treatments for PCOS.
